Postby ryder4life » Fri Jan 12, 2018 3:34 pm

Anyone know for sure what the max hdd size for ps3 is whether it's internal or external. I keep seeing either 1.5 TB that say is the max and also see 2tb. Need to buy one for my kids ps3 and nodding forums isn't the answer

sounds about right, but I think you have to watch out for the Thickness of the HDD you get too.

From my research, the internal HDD max size is 1TB (maybe 1.5TB iffy info) and USB attached external FAT32 formatted drives: 2TB for okay performance or 1TB for better performance. The performance issue has to do with the amount of memory required to hold the drive's file allocation table.

Notes on external HDD from another website.
Spoiler:
http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Harddrive

Max volume size because of compatibility: 2TB-1 @ 512B sectors, 32KB allocation unit or 4TB-1 @ 512B sectors, 64KB allocation unit (not recommended) / absolute limit would be 16 TB for 4096 byte sectors, which is incompatible with PS3

Performance consideration: with an 8TB volume size, the file allocation table itself will be 1GB, not really practical (it is 256MB at a 2TB volume size, which is still a lot larger than ps3 memory thus negatively impacting on performance).

Good stuff here, also keep in mind the thickness as previously mentioned. It must be at least thin or ultra thin to physically fit.

From what I've seen, only FAT12, FAT16 or FAT32 filesystems are supported not NTFS on an external USB attached drive.

The ps3 internal HD can be upto 1.5tb any bigger and it wont allow the drive to be used. I have 1.5tb and it works perfectly fine.
I could never find any real answer online so just stuck in bigger drives until it wouldnt work.

You can use an NTFS drive with CFW, but its limited and complex. It runs games mostly fine via prepNTFS and webman MOD, but otherwise compatibility and performance is lackluster.

I recommend external, since most homebrew assumes you're loading from a USB HDD and not internally, the largest I've gotten was 2TB and it works just fine. This is my exact model:

It's portable, doesn't require an external PSU, and is on sale on Amazon right now. No issues at all.

This is what I used played it safe with 1.5tb kept reading about people not able to use 2Tb.
Seagate STEA1500400 1.5 TB External Hard Drive just use a thin screw driver to crack it open.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019NT1P66/re ... wAbVMGRXM0

Also I am using this a 3tb external hard drive. When formatted Multiman was showing storage as 2860.987Gb pretty dang close to 3tb and I have had no problems with it other than it takes a while for all the games to show up when you refresh Multiman. Formatted fat32

Ryder 1TB on the internal. And internal can only be ps4 formatted which is does to a Fat32 spec. I run a 1tb on one of my CFW PS3 and share a 4 tb (partitioned) for my Wii. Also so PS3 CFW and apps do not like NTFS at all. One of mine will run the NTFS and the other won`t.

i really appreciate all the input from everyone. Thanks for replying. You would think as long as cfw has been around on the ps3 their would have been a guide with 100% knowledge on what works and what doesn]t

ive personally used a few 1.5TB drives with no worries, I would imagine that 2TB is the limit if I were to guess, I mean if the OG xbox can do 2tb, the ps3 should handle it, then again thats some pretty bad logic lol
