Retro Achievements

Postby FalenDragmire » Thu Feb 22, 2018 3:28 am

Has anyone here ever heard of/joined RetroAchievements? I've been a part of that community for a while now, though not necessarily active in their forums or anything. Anyway, it's basically a massive leaderboard community for logging achievements in retro console games, though there isn't much to it other than bragging rights. They use open source emulators and add their own code to allow the emulators to connect to their servers in order to log your achievements. You can even program your own achievements for a game if you want, though I'm not really sure how that whole process works since that's not my particular cup of tea.

I've heard of it but I was never interested in it because I'm playing retro games for the reason there are no such things as achievements/trophies/e-penises.
(I also turned off these message pop ups on all of my modern systems because I hate it)

Achievments are a addiction this is why new games always have them. Do you play the game for enjoyment or do you play the game for a achievement.

I like to finish games but am not into speed runnings, high scores or 1CC achievements. I don't have the time and the skills.
I 'm what you might call an easy-mode achiever.

Although not interested in it that much, I am ok with achievements.
I do frown upon stupid things like 'you started the game', 'you finished the tutorial', 'reach level 250' and 'play 5000 online matches'
But their existence don't bother me, and it's actually kind of cool to get an trophy for some really hard to perform task like speedruns, no damage run or let's say any real challenges.

I'm there. Love it. It's a great addition and motivation to play more retro games. There's also metagamerscore, which lets you track your achievements across RA, Steam, PSN, etc.

I think that achievements were a bad decision in gaming. Some people only care about the number and will cheat or play horrifficly terrible games just to boost their number.

I had a friend who spent weeks hacking and adding modded saves to his Xbox 360 and managed to earn well over 15,000 points in a matter of days, just to intimidate strangers online. Seemed like a complete waste of time.

I play games to have fun and if I do happen unlock an achievement in a new game, I usualy get irritated because the popup gets in the way of my game.

If you need achievements as a motiviation to play a video game you are playing it for the wrong reasons and you don´t like the game in the first place. I hate acievements, they are obviously only there to keep the attention of kids with a short attention span that need that pop-up message or otherwise they don´t feel like they did something.
