upgrade already softmodded xbox

Postby op417even » Wed Jun 13, 2018 4:38 pm

Hi,
I setup my two xboxes recently as they had been in storage a long while, moving house and what not but they both still work.
I softmodded them years ago (Unleashx dash) , and would really like to upgrade the drives as they are only 40gb each. I have a couple of spare 1.5 TB drives (WD greens) and have ordered a ide to sata converter in readiness.
How do i go about this .. i understand methods have changed.

What are my options.. maybe better dash now ?

Cheers for any advice

I use chimp to upgrade the HDD on softmods. Search the threads for info and use the most recent version as its also the simplest with a prompt for the switch of drives.

Dont forget to get 80 wire 40 pin ide cable to replace the stock 40 wire/pin one. The stock cable can cause issues with sata drives.

Don't think so, the last time i used one it was a 24inch cable. Not sure a 19inch would be long enough.

Chimp 261812 download from here

The IDE-to-SATA adapter must have MASTER/SLAVE jumpers to work with the Xbox app Chimp to clone the HDD. Which adapter did you purchase?

I replaced some of my IDE cables with 80 wire ones a few years ago and the minimum length cable I found usable was 18" and that was far from ideal. I'd suggest 22" - 24" are the size to go for but longer is fine as they can always be folded on top of the disc drive and HDD.

Just got myself a 24 inch cable fits perfectly. Anything else will be too short and will not fit correctly.

This is the adapter i picked up.

VGEBY Parallel ATA Pata IDE To Sata Serial ATA
from amazon.co.uk
(I cant post the link sorry)

The ide cables i ordered are 36" so will definitely have to do some folding !

thanks for all the advice.
regards

OK my adapter arrived, but i'm currently thinking of using a different drive for the upgrade.
A Seagate barracuda LP 2TB drive.
Question .. can the xbox use a drive this size ? bearing in mind its soft-modded..
And is the cluster size handled automatically or do i need to ensure a certain size ?

Should be OK if it is lockable, most are.

No the extended partitions' cluster size is not handled automatically but the rules for a 2TB are quite simple:-

You MUST divide the extended partition free space into two equal sized partitions ie. F:\ and G:\ have to be the same size so that they will each be slightly under 1TB each.

Secondly they MUST be formatted using 64K cluster size.

I assume you will be using Chimp 261812 for the HDD replacement so it can be done then right after the cloning when still attached as slave. Just continue using the Chimp main menu softmod options for formatting the extended partitions. With the simple and clean GUI it should be easy to understand the options available.

Once done check the partition table shows both F:\ and G:\ partitions use 64K clusters.

Worth checking again using XBPartitioner v1.3 when it is installed as the master HDD.
