Dig it ! (PC)
"Dig It!" is a fun platformer developed during the mid 90s, released in CD Format for play on the PC. To put it simply, it's a combination of "Dig Dug" and "Donkey Kong Country" or any collect-a-thon side-scrolling platformer. As far as I'm aware, it was the last game produced by "Pixel Painters", the developers.
In the game, you play as "Dug Kewl", who is on a mission to save his girlfriend, Dugette, from dinosaurs and other creatures who ravaged his home and kidnapped his girl. Dug is one tough cave-romping spelunker. He can shoot enemies with a gun that inflates various enemies (until they float away or are popped) and repel others, as well as jump, climb, and dig up soft ground to reach secret areas. He can also find various power-ups to help him on his quest such as spring shoes, auto-fire, and a jetpack to fly (until he hits an obstacle). Levels are timed, but you can replenish time by grabbing hourglasses.
Scattered across levels are a variety of golden treasures (besides the "Dug" statues which heal you or give extra lives) that you must collect three of to get teleported for a bonus chance. After clearing a certain number of stages, you'll come across a save point which documents how much stuff you find in the game (through a percent) as well as find clues about Dugette's whereabouts. There is a little variety in the levels too, though they generally all take place deep underground. Some are straightforward left-to-right affairs, while others have multiple chambers and some are even maze-like in construction. The game has an end boss, Spurkasaur.
For a pretty obscure game by a fairly low-key developer, "Dig It!" sports great sprites and character animations as well as pretty awesome music, and a simple on-going story too. Even better, the game has user-friendly options for changing the type of music device in use and adjusting in-game music and sounds. "Dig It" is seldom challenging, though you'll lose a few lives here and there and it's a decent length too. If you like old-school platformers and games with lots of secret areas, "Dig It" is one I can recommend. Enjoy.
