First go at the Sega Game Gear

Postby Biggsy666 » Fri Sep 22, 2017 7:05 pm

So i decided to try and fix up a couple of Game Gears this week as i hadn't done anything to one in the past. A massive thanks to wheelman for his youtube tutorial on changing the caps. I also added a new screen from Ebay to the blue one.

Any tips for the next would be great. The blue one woeks great but the red still has a pixelated screen. Would changing the actual screen help at all with that one. Might add some waterslide decals so any suggestions welcomed. I have another to do in yellow for a friend too.

pixilated how? Any pics? if the solder didn't adhere correctly it can have some wonky side effects. Usually with bad caps you'll only be able to view the picture from an extreme angle. If there's white sploches, almost looks like someone spilt a bit of milk on the screen that's the screen bleeding and you'll need to replace it.

Word is the Majesco GG (with gray dots instead of RGB) has a very slightly better screen. I haven't powered either of mine on for about a decade, so I recall how true this is.

Changed out all the caps for new ones again on the red Game Gear and still getting exactly the same result ^. Should have mentioned this is the same as before i had done anything at all when first tested accept maybe the dots are now more colourful/brighter. Gonna give up on this one for now and move onto a yellow one.

Yeah, really liked the red one myself but i think the actual screen is shot. I may swap the insides with another. Gonna add a small Strider Returns decal to the Blue one and have a case painted in white so gonna do that next and maybe change the LED to blue on that one.

I actually didn't buy the cap kits for these, it was much cheaper to buy big bags of each size required giving me enough to put together lots of kits.
