chance to snag a cheap ouya have questions

Postby dreamcast459 » Thu Jan 12, 2017 8:18 am

ok so i have a chance to snag an ouya for about 10$ from my mate who bought it but never used it. and i have some questions. now i did some googling and read a lil bit about a frontend called nostalgia, now all the guides i have googled seem outdated last guide i was able to find was posted back in 2013. the reason i want to buy the ouya is because #1 its cheap for a used android console #2 i wanna turn it into an emulation console for games and #3 so i can play my movies off of it, i.e. if i go on vacay i can take the ouya with me and use it to play my avi files. now i did read about something called kodi can any one link me to a reputable guide, so i can get nostalgia on the ouya and set it up as an emulation super horse.for those who ask im only looking to emulate the 8 and 16 bit gen consoles if i want 32 bit or above i own the consoles

mods if this topic is not allowed i apologize

Absolutely, buy it yesterday. It's worth that.

I'm currently getting into emulation on my Razer Forge TV box and I can tell you first hand, the Ouya/Cortex store is nice.

Need any help, feel free to message!

Also, yes. KODI (formerly XBMC) is a video player/streaming platform that can download plugins from online repos to stream free movies and TV shows. I can help with this as well :) if you do get it, get KODI 16.1 Jarvis. I've found that it has the best plugin support.

Also, Arc Browser is also a front-end like Nostalgia so it might be worth looking into as well.

I use Ouya occasionly to play snes, megadrive, nes and master system games. It does the job pretty well. the controller is garbage tho so you might want to use an alternative.

I have used the Xbox 360 Afterglow Control with the Ouya and it was a improvement. There is a app on the Google Play Store for the Ouya it has a lot of info.

I use it just for DS emulation and twitch. To me this was worth the retail price alone. I'd say get ittttttt!

Is there any kind of remote control for the Ouya? I don't like the idea of controlling the Ouya with a game controller.

Also, how well is N64 and PSX emulation on Ouya? Can I connect an external hard drive to it?

I bought one of these just as they were selling out, for a novelty really.
They do emulate quite well, albeit the stock controller does have a very slight lag.
The Ouya is locked into Droid 4.1 which makes new versions of Kodi a no-go as
they are compatible with Droid 4.4 and up. (you'll get black screen)

I have tried an older versions of XBMC 13.2 and modified it with plug ins but is still limited.
As far as a controller, this is programmed to use a controller and not a remote
It works quite nicely this way, a PS3 controller is a great substitute.
Mupen64 on android is problably the best N64 emulation that can be found
Mame reloaded rocks for this because of bluetooth, you can sync to another droid device for some multiplayer action++
Espxe works nicely as well, look into getting a powered Usb hub or a Fat 64GB+
Flash Drive as there is only one Usb port on this.
There are hacks to bring this into Droid 4.4 but I suspect from reading that it causes issues elsewhere on the SOC, so I choose to leave mine stock/

Love my ouya - look into a compatible usb hub as others have said, so you can get more storage and a better controller. The Nostalgia app is a must-buy from the store. Great front end for retro gaming!

10$? Unless you are tight on money you should take this offer. It's a bargain. Perhaps you think you won't need it much but who knows, for the price is 100% worth it. Even if you had one already it would still be a good idea to take. Just my opinion though.
Regards,

Does Nostalgia frontend support box art, game synopsis, and preview videos? Since Hyperspin for Android is limited to Tegra and K1/X1 devices, I haven't seen an Android frontend with Hyperspin -like features.

Assuming you use a powered USB hub with Ouya, can I use USB controllers?

Nostalgia does have cover art, game details and unsure about videos though.

You can use a USB hub and USB controllers, yes. Depending on the controller that is. Rooting it can enable others though. Wired ps3 and the like should be fine though.

I am not a fan of the D-pad on a PS3 controller. I would much rather use a SNES controller (High Frequency with all 6 buttons on the front, and independent turbo switches) via USB adapter.

Seems Ouya is pretty cheap where I am - around $50, which isn't too bad. Too bad Kodi is limited though. I considered a Raspberry Pi 3 as well.
