Metroidvania games?

Postby pochi » Mon Feb 19, 2018 12:11 am

Last time I asked which party games where great, we had a blast playing the suggestions.
This time I'd like to discuss "Metroidvania" games.

For those not familiar with the genre, it's a amalgamation of the names Metriod and Castlevania. Platformers with non-linear exploration and character progress are usually called such these days.

Personally I've played a few titles which I loved, so I came to ask which (obscured) ones you liked or would suggest :)

Currently playing:
Axiom Verge

Titles I played:
Castlevania Circle of the Moon
Guacamelee
Metroid II, Return of Samus
Metroid III, Super Metroid
Metroid Zero Missions
Shantae Risky's Revenge
You Have To Win the Game
Zillion (? does this game belong here)

Plan to play:
Castlevania DS/GBA/PSP/PSX titles
Metroid Fusion
Metroid II, AM2R
Shantae all titles
Strider (2014)
Super win the game
The Castle

Oh and I personally prefer 2D, so I skipped all Metroid Prime games.
I get dizzy when I play FPS games.
But maybe someone else would like to see some good 3D titles or I might give it a try :)
I hope to see some great titles coming by! :lovetiz:

If you can find it,
AM2R - Another Metroid 2 Remake

It's a fan game that got shutdown. Quite good fun.
Unfortunately, it's not allowed on TiZ

I highly recommend Aquaria. It is not a classic platformer, because you swim under water. It was made by only two people, and the guy who programmed it also made all the music (almost 2 hours of original music !). It is probably the most relaxing game I ever played. The focus is more on exploration than action, but there are also a lot of boss fights. It took me over 20 hours to finish, it has many areas, interesting story and beautiful hand drawn art.

The makers of Shantae made a game tie in for the failed Mummy reboot, it's called "The Mummy Demastered" which received a 9/10 average on Steam. I haven't played it yet though, but it looks interesting.

Ribi-Rabi is apparently a really good Metroidvania style game. It also has elements of bullet hell shooters as well. It's definitely one of those fanservice games, though, much like Shantae. Lots of scantily clad (though never ridiculously so) characters.

I have been waiting for this topic...

When I think of a "true" Metroidvania game, it must have the following features (this is my opinion, but I am sure many will agree):

- a map system (preferably on one in the corner of the main screen, and/or a submenu)
- has action
- requires exploring and backtracking
- boss fights
- weapons and items required to overcome certain obstacles

Most people have played Axiom Verge, which is the benchmark of the modern Metroidvania genre.

I played AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) on the PSTV with DS4 controller, and it took me just under 8 hours to complete (at 92% before I beat it), and this game was the 2D Metroid game we all wish we had as a follow up to Metroid Fusion.

For Android (I play Android games on my Nvidia Shield Portable):

Saving Princess - a short, but sweet 8-bit pixel art game
Traps n' Gemstones - a 16-bit style pixel art game with an Indiana Jones look alike main character
Caos Trigger - this reminds me of a Castlevania game, and is still in Demo stage

Actually there been a few updates, mostly fan for the latter versions. It was like 1.3.3 I last checked. The fixed a few more bugs and even added new stuff. 1.1 official, later fan updates.

Thanks for the suggestions, I see some titles I've heard of and should give them a try.
I'll make sure I'll check out all of them :)

Could you elaborate on that?

Yeah, I heard the story.
Probably wrong timing for their release, because Nintendo was releasing it's own version of the remake. I kept an eye out for AM2R for a long time and downloaded v1.0 before the shutdown.
So it's already on my "Plan to play list" :)

That's a pretty nice description, although I don't mind if the game derives from it a bit.
You have to win the game for example was really fun, although the player has no attacks.
The game focused more on platforming and solving puzzles.

And yes, Axiom Verge got me hooked! Really addicting game.

Same here, and Aquaria fills all those criteria.

It is. In fact, the Wikipedia article on it lists it as a Metroidvania game:

Looking at the video it reminds me a bit of Aeterno Blade, which I didn't like that much.
That game felt unpolished and all.
You suggestion seems interesting though!

well, this is what i have found in that game :
great 2d graph
run good also on shitty PC (like mine)
secrets/hidden areas
not linear
amazing boss-fights

about the last point, the game also allows you to fight with bosses
even if not right prepared (spells, weapons, etc.)

@ZX81v2 : I'd like to edit first post to list all recommendations, is that possible in some way?
This would make it easier for newcomers who would like to make new recommendations or those who are looking like me.

Yeah, it looks great.
Not like this:

Although I'll give it another shot some day.

The Castlevania DS games are a lot of fun, along with Metroid Fusion. You need to play those games.

I am also a big fan of Legacy of the Wizard, but you will need a walkthrough to help you get through that one.
