The 'problem' with the original Xbox is the fact that only its genuine exclusives made full use of its superior graphical capabilities. Most Xbox games are cross-platform and it was always tied to the graphics of the lowest common denominator console which, in that generation, was the PS2.

That applies to the GC too. GC exclusives like F-Zero GX can indeed be outstanding in the graphics department.

There is also the output support and regional matters to consider too. The original Xbox in PAL regions did not support ED/HD resolutions at all whilst both the PAL PS2 and GC and did. Component cables for the PS2 were cheap and easily found but many PAL PS2 games did not support progressive scan and could not be forced as some people claimed.

The GC's progressive scan support was stripped from later PAL models and the official Component cable was a horrendously expensive import anyway, typically £30 - £50 plus import taxes.

So in the UK/EU and PAL users everywhere most people would have just been using SD resolutions for all games/platforms.

However once it was found that the Xbox could be relatively easily modded and the NTSC dash board with 480p+ support became available worldwide any questions about which console had the best graphics became almost redundant in PAL regions for most users. Take a Xbox exclusive, like the original Splinter Cell was at the time, and it is Xbox FTW.

This is aided not least by the fact most PAL Xbox games are not region locked and do support 480p too.

Original Xbox was WAY ahead of PS2. I have a game MX Unleashed that is in 1080i. Did PS2 have anything close to that?

What you been smok'n Ace.The bloody xbox was made 1 year after the ps2 *rolls eyes*

edit: in other words ms knew what the specs of the ps2 were.It didn't help with the cost of the xbox either,it was over a grand down under.Around 04 sales began to pick up momentum, mostly due to xbox live & having no whiney kids to deal with, unlike ps live
