Best Way To clone Large Hard Drive?

Postby Retronics » Thu Feb 15, 2018 8:18 am

Ok let's say I have 2 Tsop Flashed /chipped Og Xboxs.
Xbox 1. Is my personal Xbox with an unlocked 500gb sata hard drive loaded with games.
Xbox 2. Is a freshly Tsop'd xbox with the stock hard drive.

The end goal is to install a 500gb hard drive in xbox 2 which is cloned from xbox 1.

Would chimp work to clone sata hard drives or is it possible in hexen?
Would it be smarter be possible to clone xbox drives on a P.C.

any help would be appreciated :D

First option, use Chimp 261812 and a Molex Power splitter on Xbox #1 to clone its 500GB to a new one. You'll need Xbox #2's EEPROM.bin backup uploaded to Xbox #1 to Y:\eeprom.bin (note the all lower case name change!). You can then use Chimp's slave drive options to use Xbox #2's eeprom.bin (Y:\eeprom.bin) data (HDDKey) to lock the new 500GB HDD to be used in it.

Spoiler:

The second option, there are USB dual-slot SATA docks that support sector-by-sector cloning. Both HDDs will need to be unlocked. Make sure the unit can do sector-by-sector and not filesystem cloning. The filesystem on an Xbox drive, FATX, is unknown - not a Windows compatible filesystem and no cloning would occur.

The HDD's cloned need to be the same size! For example, cloning a 500GB to a 2TB will result in only 500GB accessible when the 2TB drive is installed in an Xbox (for access to all space, use Chimp 261812's filesystem cloning).

Once cloned if to be installed in a soft modded Xbox, the HDD will have to be locked to the Xbox it will be installed in. If necessary, the source drive will need to be re-locked too. (Hard modded systems do not require the HDD to be locked.)

NULL HDDKey
You can also NULL, set to 0, the HDDKey of all Xbox's to swap drives between all so NULL'd consoles.

Steps to NULL HDDKey for multi-console swappable HDDs
Download, install and run Config Magic Final v1.6 or Rocky5's updated Config Magic v1.6.1 (BACKUP each Xbox's unmodified EEPROM.bin file)

  1. Unlock HDD,
  2. modify EEPROM value of HDDKey to 00000000000000000000000000000000 (32 zeros - 1 may work as long as the updated value shows up as 32 zeros)
  3. save/update modified EEPROM data,
  4. lock HDD with new HDDKey of 0/NULL.
  5. Exit ConfigMagic
  6. Reboot console.
Remember to retain/stowaway each NULLed Xbox's unmodified EEPROM.bin file for safekeeping. Just in case the need ever arises that the original HDDKey value needs to be restored. (e.g., rename each EEPROM.bin to <my_xbox_serial_number>_EEPROM.bin)

@Kaos (or anyone) Can you recommend a particular Hdd cloner? I know there are older TIZ posts about cloners but some are not available any longer. There are several choices and the prices go from dirt cheap to decent $.

(sorry dbl post, waited too long to edit)

Also, for instance if you have a unlocked Xbox hdd to clone. If the other drive is new, out of the box, I'm guessing it needs to be formatted? Unleashed X, etc. or Windows?

Thanks for the reply man! This is very helpful :ugeek:

In the past I used a old AMD64 PC set the main HDD to master and the clone to Slave then used Xbox hdm to clone it. Just make sure both are unlocked.
