FTP'ing into my XBOX produces 550 or 553 directory not found

Postby XC-3730C » Thu Nov 23, 2017 5:20 pm

I am trying to FTP some games into my Xbox, but I often see an error 550 or 553 directory not found error. I am am using FlashFXP as my FTP client, and even when transferring while running XBMC, DVD2Xbox, or UnleashX, I see this error. I know I have enough space on my Xbox.

Please help! Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Oh dear... I had the same issue just yesterday!
Did you try the FATX Bypass in the system settings from XBMC? I don´t think it´ll fix it, but give it a try.
You´re maybe connecting with too many users into the FTP-Server. Try changing the settings in the Filezilla.xml in the XBMC folder (xbmc\system\). There´s a filezilla-server.xml. Give it a look.
I set the number of connections up to 10 and hope I fixed it. Currently I´m ftp some games to my hdd

EDIT: Make sure to create a backup!

I tried all of that. Strange thing is, some games will transfer some of the files/folders and fail on others, while other games will display the "directory not found error on any file/folder. And the same files/folders that cannot transfer to my Xbox, can be copied to another drive on my PC.

I can transfer emulators without issue.

*edit* Just as a test, I trasfered a game that would constantly show the "directory not found" error onto the F partition (rather than G, which has most of my emus and most of the free space) with no problem. Is there an issue perhaps with my G partition?

Not sure if this could be it FlashFXP has a issue with how long some file names are and will not transfer them.

Well, I had the same bug. No problems with ftp to E Partition, but problems with F Partition.
Maybe try Filezilla, Total Commander. But I don´t think it´s a issue from the FTP-programs tbh
Did you install XBMC recently?

Prolerino,

XBMC was one of the first things I installed, and it is my dashboard.

I don't think the 42 character limit is the issue. For instance, Halo 2, the Halo 2/maps/fonts folder doesn't transfer at all (553 error again), and none of the files inside of it exceed 44 characters (including the file extension).

I don´t know how many files you have on your main partition (G?)
But you could reformat it and try your best

EDIT: Okay don´t do it, doesn´t work. Now I´m having the same issue...
Two days before I hadn´t this problem, it´s like outta nowhere

I have been using flashFXP for the last 24 hours filling up my new Xbox and have not had any issues with the program. Running Windows 7.

Seems like XC-3730C and me having some weird of game limits. After I ftp like 11 games, ftp won´t work anymore. I copied a game into my E Partition and tried copying it via XBMC into my F Partition. Even that didn´t work out

That is unusual with XBMC as that can correct file names that are too long usually by using an underscore.

If this were UnleashX I'd be convinced it was a file name or file level issue and the failure to transfer between drives too.

That is a typical problem for any folder that contains text files with no displayed extensions. This is an issue I've found causes trouble even with things like XBMC version updates with Readmes, Changelogs and some other text documents, particularly in the Plugins > Python folder.
Use XBMC and the same problem does not occur.

But games, at least original Xbox games, shouldn't be a problem and as XBMC is stated as being used for th FTPing anyway I'd think it must be something else.

However, something is nagging at me (distantly) that XBMC's FTP or user setting has some option that may have to be ticked to allow this parsing (if that is the right term) but don't quote me on that.

HisDivineShadow,

For most of my transfers, I use the HeXEn disc which of course is UnleashX, but I have this issue when using that, UnleashX on it's own, DVD2Xbox, and XBMC. I haven't done any retail game FTP'ing (I just set up retro games on the Xbox's that I set up for others), but I am setting up an Xbox this time with retro games, and now retail games.

I have been using FlashFXP reliably for years, and I really am not convinced that this issue is related to an FTP client.

If you're softmodded boot into SID and ftp with filezilla, it works for me on windows vista. I also use a router for ftp purposes, it only fails on me because of character limit.

Oh, happy thanksgiving to you too!!

How big is the HDD? Type SATA or IDE? If SATA, is an 80-wire 40-pin high-speed ATA100/133 cable installed?

How much free space is available on the partition/drive you are uploading to? What cluster size is being used by the partition having problems and how large is that partition?
(Check cluster size in use for extended partitions with XBPartitioner v1.3)
XBPartitioner v1.3 Partition List.jpg

To me, sounds like the wrong cluster size is in use for the partition in question. 'ER' would be shown for the cluster size. Once you try to write data past the end of the maximum cluster number (32-bit counter overflow), writes to the HDD will overwrite data at the start of the partition -- corrupting the partition -- files/folders will disappear. The drive's free space will indicate that room is available to store more files but it is not accessible.

I´m back after long troubleshooting.
I flashed the iND-Bios 5003 67 F+G to use XBPartitioner (for the LBA48 compatibility).
I have a 160GB HDD and formatted two partitions (F and G) and clustered with 16k since it´s a 160GB HDD.
I still have problems with my F Partition (maybe it´s faulty for some reason) but the G Partition seems to work just fine.
Thank you very much kaos_engr! :)

@scorpNZ
Do you think my HDD is broken or something because the F Partition doesn´t work properly?

My 500gb HDD is a SATA drive with IDE adapter. F partition is 120gb/16k clusters, and the rest is on G which is 32k clusters.

These cluster sizes have been verified by running XBPartitioner v1.3?

Make sure there is no ER printed next to the partition size.
