[Dreamcast] help needed to burn some .cdi files

Postby Graou » Fri Oct 20, 2017 12:07 pm

Hi guys, french new guy here.

So, I dug my old Dreamcast out, in order to let the kids know what a real console is. Truth is, they love it!

I found some good games here that I haven't already played. I read some tutorials, grabbed some Verbatim CD-r, Alcohol 120% and tried to burn some games.

The thing is, the lowest speed that I can go is x16... The game is booting, but it's only booting. Over, and over again...

Is there a way to burn a .cdi file at x16 speed and to get a playable game? Thanks for your help!

First, get the CDI plugin for ImgBurn and use that. Second, not all CDI discs were self booting. Some required the Utopia Bootdisc to be put in first and then swapped out. I would check you CDI image to see if it is self-booting. But definitely use ImgBurn.

DiscJuggler is the best for CDI Images.
For Dreamcast games, use with these Advanced Options:
.
- Mode: Mode 2
- Block: 2352
- TOC: CD-XA
- Misc Options: Raw Write, Overburn (disable the other options)
.
And don't forget to Write in the Slowest Speed.

Really? I think most on TIZ would disagree with this. The majority of users would recommend IMGburn with pluggins, its far superior to DJ.

lol. I still don't get people these days. I've used imgburn for EVERYTHING. Works flawless every time on movies Dual Layer and all games. Never understood why people were like use this program for this and this for this. So not needed, and people are like burn at this speed LMAO. Never had an issue with burn speeds either.

That ^^ was the old DJ settings years ago that we all used. It's still the best secondary app to for DC images, if you don't like imgburn.

That's because now, IMGburn is ideal for all tasks in general, yet if you was part of the old generation of the late 90's, early 2k scene when it came to burning discs, it was not always the case of using just one particular application to do everything, due to compatibility issues.

Discjuggler was the application of choice for DC images in the scene when it all started. If users recommended it now still, it will most likely because they were early adopters of the self boot images and have still sworn by it since Echelon released the SB tool Kit. I myself, still use Discjuggler and have Imgburn too.

Regards to burn speeds, again, in the early days and the hardware too at the time, the CD-ROM drives had read speeds of 2x, so burning a disc @ 8/16x and higher, it sometimes caused read errors. The Gamecube is a prime example, as Ideally 2x is the optimum burn speed for best results.

I have modded 100's over the years and own 7 of my own now and not one, would work 100% with a disc burnt @4x or above, even with pot tweaks and using Ritek G04 discs, as DRE would occur at some point.

It's another thing that is debatable with a lot of people (and no concrete evidence to back it up), yet I have always stuck by that rule and burn at lower speeds. All my CD based systems from the 90's are still going strong.

Yeah, i used DJ back in the day too but now its IMGburn all the way. I wouldn't recommend it now. Also I was never very fond of alcohol120 at all, it just didn't seem to work that well for me.

Yup. I always used Discjuggler to burn my .cdi files. I've never used IMGburn to do cdi's so I can't say whether or not it's better, but I never had any trouble with Discjuggler.

Alcohol 120 is trash and bloatware imo :)

Thanks to all.

I now use IMGburn; it's a blast! Thing is, the first file I tried was corrupted... It now works fine :) .
