The Fear (NTSC-J) settings for OPL 0.93

Postby Andes » Mon Jul 17, 2017 7:00 pm

Not sure if this is the right place for this, feel free to shift it to the appropriate section as necessary. I'm not entirely sure whether anyone will even be particularly interested, but I've been determined to have a crack at The Fear, so have downloaded the Disc 1 ISO from here and FTP'd it to my HDD. HDL (err 0.8 I think, not the orig version) unsurprisingly didn't want to know, but OPL 0.93 had a good try before tripping up. I set Mode 2 to On in game settings, and that worked for a bit before repeated freezes. The console didn't crash, you could still hit the OPL reset buttons and it reset merrily. I set Mode 1 to On as well as 2, and thus far it's playing fine. The game is v creepy despite not having a foggiest idea what anyone is saying  and in a roundabout way kinda overcompensates for the lack of comprehension. If this set-up prevails and the game continues to run fine feel free to add this info to any relevant compatibility lists on site :)
Apologies if no-one is remotely interested in bizarre Japanese titles

PS2 compatibility is talked about quite often here on TiZ.
Sounds like you got a grip on the MODES too so well done

Not too much of a grip sadly, after playing perfectly for several hours yesterday as described above (mode 1 & 2 on) it ran for about 10 minutes today before doing the standard sudden freeze. So annoying, I mean fair enough I don't understand the mode descriptions / functions particularly, but it seemed to maybe make sense to have mode 2 on at least. Ah well, I'll keep fiddling and post any results worth sharing, though the new Plan A is just to ESR patch the iso and burn it. I'm not sure the ancient and hiccupy disc drive will play ball with a burnt disc, it's refused point blank to entertain PS1 discs for years now so it aint looking good

Cheers, and nice work on the pretty exhaustive list! Those combos of modes to try may well prove to be most helpful, I'll certainly be giving them a spin. My limited research thus far has been to read Shaolin Assassin's guide to OPL 0.93, his mode descriptions are spot on, it's just that I'm not particularly savvy depthwise with computers, so I've had to kind of guess what his descriptions might actually mean in super-layman;s terms, and whether I think the game would be forcing the issues that any particular mode-setting might rectify. So, guesswork then  I'll post my findings once i've fiddled further...

Apologies for the double-post, it ain't clear how to edit a previous post. It appears that enabling modes 1,2 and 5 does the job for running the game smoothly. Academic if OPL can't get around the disc swapping, but still, for the sake of completion I figured it was worth posting my findings.

edit : Ha! Now the edit tab appears, although not on the post above. Ah well.
