Is this replaceable?

Is this replaceable?

Postby TheOmikronNomadSoul » Thu Nov 23, 2017 6:10 pm

So my sister wanted an Xbox to relive her days when she would play Buffy for hours and I decided why not and found an Xbox for her online. Looking at the pictures I noticed the plastic where it says "Xbox" on top is cracked. Is this something easily replaceable? I can live with it but one day I may wanna fix it. Thanks for any info. Here is a photo of it.

doesn't look like to be made in one piece, salvaging a junk should get you the needed plastic thing.

It was mentioned about a year ago and I remembered there was a few YT videos on it ..

Hairdryer and flat headed screwdriver needed, that's all, looks gruesome but you wanna fix it don't you ? & you can even change it's color to silver or black if you can get a junker in clear or clear green.

Replace it with one the same OR do the jewel case mod.

To get them off usually requires either the hair dryer or the freezer method. Look up the jewel case mod for info on removing, cleaning off the green (either for the case mod or to spray underneath to make it a new colour).

Thanks for all the input guys. I was hoping I didn't have to destroy the housing but it seems like that's the case here. I might go ahead and grab one of those clear housing for it and find a broken Xbox online. Thanks again everyone.

You don't have to destroy the housing to remove the jewel. The video shows him bending the shit out of the case but you don't need to, just heat it with the hair dryer then remove it with a screw driver or similar without bending the casing. Or put the lid in a freezer for about 2 hours then it just bangs off (usually).

I was just gonna say that, Biggsy ..

You should be able to do it no problem without destroying her original case, just need to get it hot enough to remove it, maybe work a hole through the centre of the lid of the junker with a slotted screwdriver while it's warm to push of the jewel and then do it again on the other to get the old one off, clean up the hole damage on the outside and re-hot glue, if you don't get it bang on straight push it through again and re-do it, should work.

Ah okay. The video made me think otherwise. Alright that sounds good to me. So just buy a broken xbox with the jewel intact (or just find the jewels separately) and test my luck out then. Thanks guy's! Oh and happy thanksgiving to you all!

Another alternative is to put a skin over it. I notice these skins cover the jewel. Just get a whole new skin for the sucker. Not feeling that red skin anyway, LOL.

Worth mentioning, once you have it off and have a replacement to go back on, it's hard to NOT get it back on straight. There are little raised V's on each side of the top cover that correspond to the outer edges of the X's and the X's kind of fit over those V's and lock it in place.

Probably didn't do a good job of explaining it but once you have the jewel off you'll see what I'm talking about. I will say I did the hair dryer method and cracked the first one I did (was trying to get it off to make it clear, nothing was wrong with it). Bought another used one online and took the green paint off to make it clear then polished it up and just laid it back on the V's mentioned above. I decided I will NEVER do that again. If I want a clear one for any of my other boxes I'll buy a clear one. It wasn't worth it for the wear and tear on my fingers removing that green paint and then buffing all of my sandpaper and scratch marks.

Remove the green paint with nail polish remover, no sandpaper needed. Make sure you heat the jewel long enough when removing, if it aint coming off heat it some more or try the freezer method. Heres the results of a Jewel Case Mod with clear Jewel.
