ABIT Fatality AA8XE Mobo opinions

Postby Randummy1 » Mon Jan 22, 2018 3:48 am

Hi guys. So long story short, my landlord remodeled my apartment and when moving stuff back in I discovered my roommate had this Mobo lying around in the box.

Here is a review from tech power up,
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Abit/AA8XE/

It appears to have all the parts to it, drivers, manuals etc.

Also this Pentium 4 was sitting in the mobo minus a heat sink.

https://www.google.com/shopping/product ... QsQuC8ImQE

What I would like to know is do you guys think it would be worth it to build a computer around this?

I also have a EVGA Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS lying around to put in this thing and my roommate said I could have the mobo for free!! :D :D

Even better is that there is a Goodwill down the street that has a dedicated electronics store in the main building full of stuff that people like us love so it would not cost too much to build a computer around this mobo.

Couple things I would like to point out, I know I could spend money on a better build but this IS a hobby.  Also I have come to value and respect the opinions of my fellow Zoners which is why I started this thread to begin with. I am ALWAYS learning something new!! :D :D :lovetiz: :lovetiz: :lovetiz: :lovetiz:

Keep those opinions and suggestions coming!!

Forgot to ask, if this thing can only handle a 32 bit os, what is the max size of a hdd I can put in it and could a 64 bit os run on it? ( Reason why I ask is Google was NOT my friend regarding if this is 32 or 64 bit at least for me. )

I once ran Windows 7 64 bit os on a Vista rated mobo with no problems.

As always, happy gaming!! :D :D :lovetiz: :lovetiz: :lovetiz: :lovetiz:

Your limited to 32bit, and your gonna want a pci sata card
you wont find new ide drives anymore

If this is old used hardware, there may be a reason why its in a box
I would only consider this if you have a boner for a XP machine
Otherwise pass and use virtual XP
Spoiler:
spend your cash on a huge drive to put more games on :D

Board has 4 sata ports for sata hdd.. The board appears to be unused at any time, the cpu is obviously used.. Is the mobo limited to 32 bit? What if I swapped a 64 bit capable cpu? Thanks for the suggestion.

Apparently I should have put my glasses on

A core duo would work 64bit, but just the same...why?

Modern dual and quad cores are cheap enough to build,
MHZ is not everything when it comes to power and speed
Also, older cpu's have older instruction sets
Up to you what you would use this for.

Just my .02¢

.02 cents noted but with respect Mr. Pink, did you read my entire OP? It's a hobby as stated like a lot of things that people do on this site and it is retro

Besides, this thing is supposed to allow me to overclock and it would be better to learn how to do that on not very expensive stuff. This is no different than tinkering with old consoles or computers and things like a lot of people here do already and besides, it's FUN!!!!

So moving forward, anyone else?

I say if its something you really want to do go for it. I added up the parts to build a super basic miniITX based HTPC that was capable of light games and it came to around $300 before the inflated prices of RAM and that's not counting a graphics card, so I'd use that as a baseline to decide how much you'd want to put into this machine to get into overclocking considering its age and what you can build a new one for.

I have a Dell Optiplex 760 SFF that I just sunk $90 into for a GT 1030 and that computer is probably just as old because they have the same CPU socket, for my needs I think it was worth it.

I can understand why you want to work with what you already have and it is a fun hobby, you just have to figure out what you're okay with spending on it. I'd probably go new on the power supply like a $60 EVGA PSU that way you know it can safely handle an overclock then buy everything else used for as cheap as you can get it, case, hard drive, RAM, etc.
