My 6TB blanked itself - is it bad? Can data be recovered?

My 6TB blanked itself - is it bad? Can data be recovered?

Postby XC-3730C » Wed Jul 11, 2018 8:06 pm

I have a 6TB HDD that I use in a SATA USB 3.0 dock, and one day, it had all my data on there, then the next day, it showed up in Windows 10's partition and drive manager as having Unallocated Space. Is my drive bad? I go through the proper procedure of ejecting it before turning off the dock. Can the data be recovered somehow (if it comes down to paying for a data recovery service, forget it)?

No guarantees of course but sometimes sudden partition loss is down to some type of corruption. There are various free tools that MAY help. Have a look at following for your consideration:

Free partition recovery from unallocated space with EaseUS Partition Master

How to Recover Lost Partition Using Partition Recovery Software

Could be a MBR issue. You may be lucky. Try this

have you tried it on another computer? do you have another dock to try? or hook it straight into a desktop PC to see if it will come up properly?

testdisk is very good for re-setting the boot-up part of partitions that might have been corrupted.

It has a dos and windows version ,it's got me out of trouble many times in the past.

Spoiler:
The Windows version of TestDisk & PhotoRec should work under
- Windows NT 4
- Windows 2000
- Windows XP
- Windows 2003
- Windows Vista
- Windows Server 2008
- Windows 7
On Windows 64-bit, WoW64 (Windows 32-bit On Windows 64-bit) is required to run
these 32-bit executables.
For Windows 64-bit without WoW64, use the Windows 64-bit version of TestDisk
& PhotoRec.

If you are using an older version of Windows, run the DOS version of TestDisk.
You can download it from http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

TestDisk doesn't need to be installed, you only need to
- extract the files
- run testdisk_win.exe or photorec_win.exe

TestDisk & PhotoRec documentation can be found online:
- http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

Run something like minitool or easeus partition recovery.
This will show you whats there as tho you were looking at computer management after you've finished scanning. It will take some time due to size of drive.
I've used it on the odd occasion for the same reason when partitions disappear & agree it's most likely a mbr issue.
It will recover the partitions if they're there.
As far as i can tell it doesn't write data over your data it instead just rebuilds the mbr & places the partition markers where they should be,as i've brought back a wrong partition deleted it then recovered the correct one

Edit: try linux first & see what it can see however you'll need another drive to save the contents too,tho i'm not sure a broken mbr will allow linux to see it either.

Once partitions/data is recovered run a check disk on it like seatools both short & long.It will tell you while it's scanning if there are sector issues
